Ask anyone how they are and the answer is “busy.” It has become the socially approved way to say “fine” — a status update disguised as a complaint.

Busyness as performance

Somewhere along the way, being overwhelmed stopped being a problem to solve and became a personality to display. We compare calendars like trophies and treat rest as something to be earned, ideally after we’re too tired to enjoy it.

Try it for ten minutes. Society will survive your absence. So will you.
