Films to Fall Asleep To (Affectionately)

A connoisseur’s guide to the movies you’ve started forty times and finished twice. This is not an insult to cinema. It’s a love letter.

Some films are made to be watched with rapt, upright attention. This guide is not about those films. This is about the warm, familiar movies that exist to be half-watched under a blanket at 11pm.

The criteria

A great fall-asleep film must be:

• Familiar — you’ve seen it, so missing twenty minutes costs nothing.
• Gently lit — no jump scares, no strobing spaceship battles.
• Kind — you want to wake up during the happy ending, not the betrayal.

The canon

Cosy period dramas. The comfort blockbuster you know by heart. Anything narrated in a soothing voice about the ocean. We rate them not by plot but by how safe they make the couch feel — and by that measure, they’re masterpieces.
